About the project
Jellyfish on Google Maps
Google Maps set out to prove what immersive AR could do inside the world's most-used map, and chose an educational partner to do it. Together with the Aquarium of Paris, Broken Egg built an experience to raise awareness of how changing seas affect marine life.
An Ocean in 20MB
Partnering closely with Google, Broken Egg created an AR experience that surfaces at the top of the aquarium's Maps listing. On site, jellyfish rise from the ground in augmented reality; from anywhere in the world, Street View recreates the moment. The defining feat was compressing five animated species into under 20MB, small enough to ship to more than a billion devices. Broken Egg was one of a handful of studios chosen to build directly with Google.
1.5 Million Uses
The experience reached around 1.5 million uses, largely from home and with no marketing spend. It served as a proof of concept for a more immersive Maps, with the aquarium at the center of it.
