About the project

Keeping a Craft Alive

Museum Speelklok champions a rare and remarkable craft, the making of self-playing musical instruments, from delicate music boxes to grand Dutch street organs. The museum saw an opportunity to carry it forward to a new generation, showing young audiences that the ingenuity behind these machines, energy, sound, and programming, is all around them.

Building a Musical World

The project began with thorough concepting alongside the museum's team, shaping every game around what would genuinely engage a young visitor. Developed in house, it became nine mini-games drawn from real pieces in the collection, woven into a single gamified world of Utrecht with a climactic boss level. Alongside it, Broken Egg created a full education program with four schools, translating each game into classroom learning for children aged 8 to 12.

After the success of the online Roblox game, Museum Speelklok wanted interactive experiences for their new exhibition, along with a way to connect the two worlds so online players could pick it up on site and on-site visitors could continue the full game at home. The on-site gallery called for a purpose-built solution: a self-contained experience that runs fully offline and never interrupts a visitor mid-session, so Broken Egg engineered exactly that for the space, taking the 3D assets from the Roblox project, refining the games with everything learned from the online launch, designing a fresh interface, and delivering it as a smooth offline Unity system for the museum's touchscreens.

350,000 Players

The game reached around 350,000 players, holding them for an average of 8 to 10 minutes against a Roblox norm of roughly 2, a strong level of engagement. Still live and evolving, it connects the museum to classrooms and to a generation of new visitors.
